NextGen Program

The NextGen program in partnership  with Tennessee State University, Washington State University, and University of Guam, strives to engage, train, support, and retain highly skilled and motivated professionals creating resilience and economic stability within the national and local island community. To do this, NextGen offers scholarships, experiential learning, and other community focused initiatives.

Scholarships

NextGen Scholarships support eligible undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in food and agriculture sciences, natural resources, agritourism, engineering, human sciences, and related sciences. Available for residents of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), these scholarships aim to overcome barriers for eligible undergraduate and graduate students, fostering knowledge enhancement and retention in the CNMI. Applicants must provide proof of US citizenship or permanent residency and be residents of CNMI.

  •  Veterinary Medicine (with a focus on livestock and animal sciences)
  • Agriculture Economics, Engineering, and Related Agricultural fields
  • Horiculturre
  • Entomology 
  • Food Systems
  • Tropical Aquaculture
  • Fisheries & Aquatic Sciences 
  • Biostatistics 
  • Computer Science
  • Biological Sciences
  • Botany and/or Plant Science
  • Nutrition and Health & Related FANH Programs

Eligibility

 ✓ Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and residents of CNMI.

✓ Have been accepted to or already enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education.

✓ A cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.

✓ Demonstrate financial need (please provide a detailed explanation).

✓ Be willing to commit to working in CNMI after graduation based on funding level. 

✓ Continued eligibilty for renewal is based on satisfying grant conditions.

Step 1:

Step 2: Applications are reviewed and screened by both internal and external boards 

Step 3: Qualified applicants will be interviewed 

Step 4: All candidates will be notified of final decisions.

Experiential Learning Field Trips

Experiential Learning Field Trips are open to eligible NMC students.  These trips give students first-hand experience and global exposure in the areas of agritourism, food science, natural resource management and related areas.  


NMC Students Learn More About Sustainable Development in Fukuoka, Japan

Six (6) students from Northern Marianas College were selected to participate in the first-ever Experiential Learning Field Trip held from February 14th to 22nd, 2024, in Fukuoka, Japan, hosted by the NextGen Program. Among the distinguished participants are Rosemarie Faisao, Mark Terlaje Pangelinan Jr., Roxzanna Pangelinan, Andrea Roberto, Madison Sablan, and Bonnie Gio Sagana.

Community Initiatives

Community Workshops & Summer Academies

Developed in collaboration with Washington State University, NextGen will offer a variety of month-long workshops. The workshops will be open and announced to the community once developed.  Workshops will focus on agriculture, agritourism, veterinary sciences, among other topics. 

The summer academies will be developed in collaboration with UOG, and will focus on the food sciences.

 

Minorities in Agriculture Natural Resources and Related Sciences

Minorities in Agriculture Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS) is an national professional organization that provides ongoing professional development opportunities, internships, and resources for career professionals and students.  Our MANRRS club is new to NMC and open to all students interested in this career path.
